Dr. Harold May

FAMILY Founder.

Harold May was born in Peekskill, NY, in 1926. He entered Harvard College in 1944 as part of the accelerated program during World War II and entered the Air Corps in 1945, becoming part of the Tuskegee Airmen program. After the war, Dr. May returned to Harvard, and entered Harvard Medical School in 1947. After medical school, Dr. May completed a surgical residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, which was interrupted by eye surgery. During his convalescence, he traveled to Haiti and, after his residency, returned to Haiti, where he worked at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital. He also served as Director of Community Health at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, Medical Director of the Wrentham Developmental Center, and as Founder of FAMILY, Inc., a non-profit which creates secure and nurturing environments of mutual supports in which all children and families can thrive.

Bill Walczak

Passionate Community Leader, Health Advocate and FAMILY Board Member.

Bill is most associated with the re-development of the Codman Square area of Boston, a multi-cultural community which foundered in the 1970s and became an area known for racial unrest and economic disintegration. Bill was founding president and CEO of the Codman Square Health Center, a major factor in the regeneration of the community, was founding president of Codman Academy Charter School, and most recently was CEO of the South End Community Health Center in Boston where he developed a joint medical residency in psychiatry and family medicine. He has been a President and/or CEO of health care organizations for 42 years. He is currently retired from regular employment and writes columns for his community newspaper, The Dorchester Reporter.

Bill is chair of the Board of Trustees of Bunker Hill Community College, and chair of the Massachusetts Business Alliance for Education. He is a trustee of the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education, representing community colleges. He was founding president of the Massachusetts Nonprofit Network, a founder of the Edward Kennedy Health Careers Academy, a founder of the Center for Community Health, Education, Research and Service at Northeastern University, and founding president of Boston HealthNet. He is a past President of the UMass/Boston Alumni Association. He serves on the boards of the Rappaport Center at Boston College Law School, FAMILY, Daily Table, HealthWorks at Codman, The American City Coalition, the Pat Cooke Fund, the Trustees Group, and Massachusetts State College Building Authority. Bill is the elected president of the Columbia-Savin Hill Civic Association, representing a large part of the Dorchester neighborhood. p>

Bill served on both Governors Deval Patrick's and Charlie Baker's Health Care Transition Committees, and on Acting Mayor Kim Janey's Transition Committee. He is also co-director of the Pat Cook Fund, which supports curriculum development around the environment. Bill has worked on community regeneration efforts in a number of countries around the world. He was involved with the Northern Irish peace process for over a decade and led a program in post-apartheid South Africa that included support of patients with HIV, support of a women's empowerment center, built a technology center for a school and developed a micro-enterprise project. He helped to develop a family medicine program for the country of Vietnam. Bill has received numerous awards for his work and ideas.

David Mark, MD

David Mark is a primary care physician and the founder and CEO of One Health, a federally qualified health center serving rural communities in rural Montana and Wyoming. With a mission to improve the wellbeing of the whole community by providing accessible, high-quality healthcare, One Health deploys a model that emulates the FAMILY concept by integrating medical, behavioral health, pharmacy, and dental care into a seamless experience for patients.

David received his undergraduate degree from Yale University and pursued medical education at the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology. Charles F. O'Connell is the Managing Partner of the Boston law firm Taylor, Ganson & Perrin, LLP. Mr. O'Connell concentrates in taxation, estate planning, trust and estate administration, family business planning and family office administration for domestic, cross border and international clients. Mr. O'Connell serves as the Trustee of diverse types of trusts. Mr. O'Connell served as an arbitrator for the National Association of Securities Dealers and the New York Stock Exchange.

Mr. O'Connell is the author of the book “Compensating United States Employees Abroad” which was published as Volume Four of the International Business Portfolios by the Matthew Bender and Company division of the Times Mirror Company. Mr. O'Connell was also a contributing author to Bender's Federal Tax Service. Mr. O'Connell served as an Adjunct Professor of Law at Suffolk University Law School for seven years where he taught courses on the legal aspects of providing trust and investment services as well as the taxation of qualified retirement plans.

Aggie May

FAMILY - Accountant, Treasurer, Steady Hands

Aggie was born in Canada and grew up on a farm in Abbotsford, a city in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia. She was raised in the Mennonite community, a Protestant denomination known for sending volunteers around the world to support agricultural, educational, medical, and humanitarian work in twenty‑seven countries — including Haiti.

In August 1959, Aggie left Canada and arrived in Deschapelles, Haiti, to work at Hôpital Albert Schweitzer. The following January, she met a young doctor named Hal May, who had recently arrived from the United States. Aggie and Hal soon married and spent nearly eleven years in Haiti serving at the Schweitzer Hospital. Their three daughters were born there. Their first daughter, born with significant medical challenges, passed away at a very young age and was laid to rest in Haiti.

In 1970, the May family left Haiti and settled in the Boston area. Aggie devoted herself to raising her family while also taking on temporary office positions as Dr. May worked at Brigham and Women's Hospital. During their years in Boston, Aggie worked alongside Dr. May in a variety of nonprofit initiatives, including FAMILY. Over the decades, she served in many roles — accountant, treasurer, and steadfast supporter — always guided by her commitment to service.

Aggie and Dr. May's dedication to helping others is reflected in the paths their daughters have chosen. Allison is a physician in the Boston area who has spent more than twenty‑two years caring for the homeless community. Jeannette is a public health educator, and Margie, the youngest, is a dietitian.

Hope Haslam Straughan

Clinical Associate Professor of Social Work, Coordinator.

Hope Haslam Straughan is the coordinator for the dual-degree Master of Social Work/Master of Theology Studies at Boston University. “I completed my MSW studies at a seminary in which I also received a certificate in Theology,” she explains. “In this way, my understanding of the underlying philosophies of social work were coupled with a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of people and the call to care for one another—especially the vulnerable among us.”

Prior to joining the BUSSW faculty in June 2018, Haslam Straughan served as dean for the School of Social Work, Leadership, and Youth Advocacy at Wheelock College. Her research interests include spirituality within social work practice, justice-based social work, child welfare, and foster care and adoption, with a particular focus on transracial adoption. Haslam Straughan is the author of Parenting in Transracial Adoption: Real Questions and Real Answers (Praeger, 2016). Forced to choose: BSW students' experiences of a higher education merger (Journal of Social Work Education, 2023), Parental understandings of cultural difference: A study of transracially adopting couples (Families in Society, 2025), and Sustainable social work practice through ritual (Journal of Religion and Spirituality, 2025).

Haslam Straughan is also a volunteer foster care case reviewer for the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families, serves on the board of FAMILY, Inc., and Key, Inc., and reviews manuscripts for the NACSW Journal, Christianity and Social Work, as well as Simmons University's journal, Field Education.

Born in Haiti, Joel Theodat came to the United States as a young man to continue his studies. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Philosophy from Suffolk University in 1980 and a Master of Science degree in Philosophy from Boston College in 1984. For 22 years, Joel worked as a teacher and Bilingual Program Director at West Roxbury High School and at Hyde Park High in Boston, MA. Dealing mostly with Haitian youngsters who recently migrated to the United States, Joel helped them adjust to the American culture while maintaining and honoring their Haitian culture.

In 2006, his passion and love for Haiti took him back to Haiti as Executive Director of a non-profit organization providing education and health care to the people in the Bourdon area of Port-au-Prince. Joel currently teaches Haitian Creole to health care providers and others at the University of Massachusetts. His heart is fully committed to help eradicate illiteracy and denounce injustice wherever it may be. Working with Greening Haiti Fund is another extension of his efforts to help the people of Haiti.
